Vietnamese Pho

Pho is a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup, often considered the national dish of Vietnam. It is a flavorful broth-based soup filled with rice noodles, herbs, and meat, typically beef or chicken. This comforting and aromatic dish is known for its rich and savory taste, thanks to the combination of spices like star anise, cinnamon, and cloves.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound beef bones
  • 1 onion, halved
  • 3 slices ginger
  • 5 star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 cloves
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 8 ounces rice noodles
  • 1 pound beef sirloin, thinly sliced
  • Fresh herbs (cilantro, Thai basil, mint)
  • Bean sprouts
  • Lime wedges
  • Sliced chili peppers

Instructions:

 

  1. In a large pot, roast the beef bones, onion, and ginger until browned.
  2. Add star anise, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and coriander seeds. Pour in water, fish sauce, and salt. Simmer for at least 2 hours.
  3. Strain the broth and discard the solids.
  4. Cook the rice noodles according to package instructions and divide them among bowls.
  5. Top with thin slices of beef sirloin.
  6. Pour the hot broth over the noodles and beef.
  7. Garnish with fresh herbs, bean sprouts, lime wedges, and chili peppers.
